Caption: Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through a Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacterium, the cause of human tuberculosis (consumption). This Gram- positive rod-shaped bacterium is undergoing cell division. If M. tuberculosis reaches the lungs from a cough or sneeze it will multiply to form a primary tubercle (localized bacterial colony). The bacteria then either spreads through the lymphatic system to other parts of the body, which can be fatal, or lies dormant, only becoming active again many years later. Treatment is with antibiotics. This is strain H37Rv. Negatively stained. Magnification: x24,000 at 6x7cm size. Magnification: x12,000 at 35mm size.
