Caption: Propionibacterium acnes bacteria. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through Propionibacterium acnes (formerly Corynebacterium acnes) bacteria. These bacteria are a cause of human acne. A cell wall (light green) encloses each bacteria; genetic material is seen inside the bacteria (also light green). The bacterium at right is undergoing cell division. P. acnes are Gram-positive, rod-shaped bacilli. They live off the lipid components of sebum produced by the skin. This bacteria colonises humans at puberty and is most common in the later teenage years, sometimes causing the inflammatory response of acne. Magnification: x22,400 at 5x7cm size.
