Caption: Corynebacterium diphtheriae bacteria. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through Corynebacterium diphtheriae bacteria, the cause of diphtheria. The bacteria are Gram-positive non-motile rods with dark nuclear regions. Diphtheria is caused by a potent toxin released from the bacteria. Symptoms include sore throat, fever and breathing difficulties. Fatal damage to the heart can occur. Treatment includes antitoxins, antibiotics and rest. Magnification: x8570 at 6x9cm size.
