Caption: Neisseria gonorrhoeae bacteria. Coloured transmi- ssion electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through two Neisseria gonorrhoeae bacteria. These are the cause of the sexually transmitted disease gonorrhoea ("the clap"). N. gonorrhoeae are gram- negative spherical bacteria that are often found stuck together in pairs (diplococci), as here. They have hair-like flagella and infect the genital mucous membranes of both sexes, causing pain on urination and a discharge of pus from the vagina or penis. Some cases pass unnoticed, while in others complications may develop leading to sterility. Treatment is with antibiotics. Negativ- ely stained. Magnification: x22,600 at 6x9cm size.
