Caption: Haemophilus influenzae. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through two Haemophilus influenzae bacteria (magenta). These gram-negative bacilli (rod-shaped) bacteria are an important pathogen in children. They colonise the upper respiratory tract in most humans within the first few months of life and are usually harmless. However, they may spread locally to cause diseases of the lower respiratory tract, such as bronchitis and pneumonia. Here, the two bacteria are seen in a phagocytic vacuole (yellow) of a macrophage white blood cell (green), which has engulfed them as part of the body's immune response.
