Caption: Alloiococcus bacterium. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through an Alloiococcus otitidis bacterium undergoing cell division (binary fission). The bacterial cell wall is green and two daughter cells are forming. This gram-positive coccus (spherical) bacterium is associated with otitis media (middle ear infection) in humans, especially in children. The granular layer around the bacterium is mucus from an inflamed ear. Magnification: x48,000 at 6x7cm size. x160,000 at 8x10".
