Caption: Salmonella goodhue bacteria. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Salmonella goodhue bacteria. Salmonella bacteria mainly occur in the intestines of humans and animals. Some strains are toxic and cause food poisoning (salmonellosis), resulting in abdominal pain and diarrhoea. Blood poisoning (septicaemia) can occur in severe cases. Common sources of human infection are dairy, poultry and meat products. Treatment consists of rehydration to replace lost fluids and the use of antibiotic drugs. Magnification unknown.
