Caption: Tuberculosis bacterium. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a sectioned Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacterium, the cause of tuberculosis (TB) in humans. This Gram-positive, rod-shaped bacterium is spread by coughing or sneezing, and inhaled into the lungs. There, it multiplies to form a primary tubercle, a localized colony of bacteria. The bacteria may spread through the lymphatic system to other parts of the body, which can be fatal, or they may lie dormant, becoming active again many years later. Infections can be treated with antibiotics. Magnification: x23,700 at 6x8.5cm size.
