Caption: Propionibacterium acnes bacteria. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through Propionibacterium acnes (formerly Corynebacterium acnes) bacteria. These bacteria are a cause of human acne. The bacterium at right is undergoing cell division. P. acnes are Gram- positive, rod-shaped bacilli. They live off the lipid components of sebum, an oily secretion produced by the skin. These bacteria colonise the skin at puberty and are most common in the later teenage years, when they sometimes cause acne, inflammation of the hair follicles and sebaceous glands of the skin. Magnification: x27,900 at 6x8.5cm size.
