Caption: Anthrax bacteria. Light micrograph of Bacillus anthracis bacteria, the cause of the disease anthrax. These Gram-positive, rod-shaped bacteria are highly pathogenic. Anthrax is primarily a disease of livestock, but it can be transmitted to humans by contact with animal hair, hides or excrement. Infection of the lungs (pulmonary anthrax) is usually fatal, although prompt administration of antibiotics may effect a cure. Dark field illumination. Magnification: x1000 at 6x9cm size.
