Caption: Salmonella enteritidis bacteria. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Salmonella enteritidis bacteria. These Gram-negative, rod- shaped bacteria are naturally present in the intestinal tracts of humans and animals. They can cause food poisoning in humans by producing toxins that act on the small intestine. Infection occurs when toxin- producing bacteria are ingested in contaminated food, particularly meat, milk and eggs. Symptoms include vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhoea. The infection is treated with antibiotic drugs and is rarely fatal. Magnification: x25, 000 at 35mm size.
