Caption: Anthrax bacteria. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Bacillus anthracis bacteria, the cause of the disease anthrax in humans and livestock. These rod-shaped cells reproduce by means of round spores (one at upper right). There are two forms of anthrax. Cutaneous (skin) anthrax causes an itchy lesion at the bacteria entry site. It is usually treatable with antibiotics. Pulmonary (lung) anthrax is caused by inhaling the bacteria. It is fatal in most cases, unless treated before the symptoms begin. There is concern that terrorists could release anthrax bacteria in a populated area, which would cause many deaths. Magnification: x35,000 at 35mm size.
