Caption: Citrobacter bacteria. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Citrobacter freundii bacteria. These Gram positive rod-shaped bacteria are found in soil, water, food and as part of the normal flora of the human gut. They use citric acid as their carbon source. Although usually harmless they can cause infant meningitis and urinary tract infections in immune compromised individuals. Magnification: x3000 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
