Caption: Tereshkova after Vostok 6 landing. Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova (left, born 1937) writing the place and time of landing in her logbook after her landing from the Vostok 6 spacecraft, one of the first manned missions into space. During this solo mission, from 16-19 June 1963, Tereshkova became the first woman in space. She orbited the Earth 48 times. The landing, by parachute after ejecting from the descending spacecraft, took place in the Altai region of southern Russia. This image is a still from a documentary.
