Caption: Sergey Korolyov (1907-1966), Soviet rocket engineer, relaxing in Kislovodsk in the Stavropol region of Russia, in April 1950. Korolyov was the chief Soviet rocket designer in the 1950s and 1960s during the space race. He worked on the Vostok and Voskhod spacecraft programs, with the Vostok spacecraft launching the first human into space in 1961. Korolyov was working on plans for a Moon rocket at the time of his death. Although his role in the space program was kept secret for many years, he received many awards before and after his death for his work.
