Caption: Gagarin after Vostok 1 landing. Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin (1934-1968), soon after his landing from the Vostok 1 spacecraft, the first manned mission into space. During this solo mission, which took place on 12 April 1961, Gagarin orbited the Earth once, becoming the first human in space. Gagarin, who would become famous worldwide, received numerous awards and decorations for this pioneering space flight. He was killed during an aircraft training flight in 1968. Photographed on 12 April 1961.
