Caption: Soviet Vostok spacecraft, display model. There were a total of six manned flights in the Soviet Vostok programme, flying from 1961 to 1963. Vostok 1 is the most famous, carrying Yuri Gagarin (1934-1968) into orbit on 12 April 1961 as the first human in space. Seen here is the third stage of the Vostok launcher (cylindrical, lower right), with the Vostok 3KA spacecraft attached to it. The spacecraft had an equipment module (centre) and a 2.3-metre-diameter crew module (spherical). Designed to house a crew of one, the crew module was also the re-entry capsule. Photographed in 1971 in Moscow, Russia, at the 'Kosmos' Pavilion of the Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy of the USSR (VDNKh).
