Caption: Workers hearing of Gagarin's spaceflight. Workers at the CKD factory (Prague) listening to a radio report from Moscow on the historic spaceflight by Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin (1934-1968) on 12 April 1961. Orbiting in the Vostok 1 spacecraft, Gagarin became the first human in space. On his return he was acclaimed as a hero in the Soviet Union and became famous worldwide. Photographed in Prague, Czechoslovakia, at that time part of the Soviet-dominated Eastern Bloc and part of the Warsaw Pact. CKD (Ceskomoravska Kolben-Danek) was one of the largest engineering companies in Czechoslovakia during the Soviet era.
