Gagarin and Korolyov and wives on holiday. Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin (far left, 1934-1968) married Valentina Goryacheva (centre left) in 1957. Soviet rocket engineer Sergey Korolyov (far right, 1907-1966) married Nina Kotenkova (centre right), his second wife, in 1949. Gagarin had become the first human in space, orbiting the Earth in the Vostok 1 spacecraft on 12 April 1961. Following this historic spaceflight, Gagarin became a hero in the Soviet Union and famous worldwide. Korolyov was the chief Soviet rocket designer in the 1950s and 1960s, working on several spacecraft including the Vostok one used by Gagarin. Photographed in the Moscow region of Russia, in May 1961.
