Caption: Gagarin being tested by Korolyov. Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin (left, 1934-1968) being examined by Soviet rocket engineer Sergey Korolyov (right, 1907-1966). Gagarin is being tested on how to operate the Vostok 1 spacecraft, in which he made his ascent to Earth orbit as the first human in space on 12 April 1961. Following this historic spaceflight, Gagarin became a hero in the Soviet Union and famous worldwide. Korolyov was the chief Soviet rocket designer in the 1950s and 1960s, working on several spacecraft including the Vostok one used to place Gagarin in orbit.
