Caption: Gagarin post-flight tour, India. Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin (1934-1968) at a parade in his honour during a visit to India, one of many tours following his historic spaceflight. He is standing in a car, and the Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru (1889-1964) is at upper left. Gagarin had become the first human in space, orbiting the Earth in the Vostok 1 spacecraft on 12 April 1961. Following this spaceflight, Gagarin became a hero in the Soviet Union and famous worldwide. Nehru was a leading figure in the Indian independence movement, serving as India's first prime minister from 1947 to his death in 1964. Photographed in New Delhi, India, on 10 October 1961.
