Caption: Gagarin and Titov, Soviet cosmonauts. Yuri Gagarin (left, 1934-1968) was the first human in space, orbiting the Earth in the Vostok 1 spacecraft on 12 April 1961. Following this historic spaceflight, Gagarin became a hero in the Soviet Union and famous worldwide. Gherman Titov (right, 1935-2000) was the second person to orbit the Earth. Launched in the Vostok 2 spacecraft, he orbited the Earth 17 times from 6-7 August 1961, just four months after Gagarin's flight. Photographed in 1961.
