Caption: Gagarin doing morning exercises. Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin (1934-1968) became the first human in space, orbiting the Earth in the Vostok 1 spacecraft on 12 April 1961. Following this historic spaceflight, Gagarin became a hero in the Soviet Union and famous worldwide. He had trained extensively to go into space, but following his flight he undertook many tours around the world and within the USSR. He later returned to active service as a test pilot, dying in a crash during a training flight in 1968. Photographed in the Moscow region of Russia, on 10 May 1963.
