Caption: Yuri Gagarin (1934-1968), Soviet cosmonaut and the first human in space. Gagarin orbited the Earth in the Vostok 1 spacecraft on 12 April 1961. Following this historic spaceflight, Gagarin became a hero in the Soviet Union and famous worldwide. He later returned to active service as a test pilot, dying in a crash during a training flight in 1968. This is a still image from The First Flight to the Stars documentary film. This film was first shown at the second Moscow International Film Festival in July 1961. Photographed on 13 April 1961.
