Caption: Vostok cosmonauts including Gagarin. These three Soviet cosmonauts each crewed one of the six Vostok missions. From left to right they are: Valery Bykovsky (born 1934), Valentina Tereshkova (born 1937), and Yuri Gagarin (1934-1968). Bykovsky was one of the first men to be launched into space. He flew the solo Vostok 5 mission from 14-19 June 1963, orbiting the Earth 82 times. Tereshkova was the first woman in space, orbiting the Earth 48 times in the Vostok 6 spacecraft from 16-19 June 1963. Gagarin was the first human in space, orbiting the Earth in the Vostok 1 spacecraft on 12 April 1961. Photographed in Russia, in June 1965.
