Caption: Feces consist of digested food residues and a large proportion of a variety of microorganisms, mostly bacteria, which are well adapted to life in the intestines. Mutation into toxigenic bacteria has produced very severe health hazards when common inhabitants of the intestines developed into dangerous pathogens, e.g. Escherichia coli O157:H7. Images of the bacteria by enhanced SEM should remind the viewers that fecal matters may be dangerous and that hygienic rules should strictly be adhered to. Enhanced SEM. Image width: 14.2 micrometers; magnification: 7040x if the image is printed 10 cm wide.
