Caption: Ultrathin section of a macrophage infected with Shigella flexneri by phagocytosis. The Invastion Plasmid Antigen B (ipaB) of this bacteria is responsible for macrophage apoptosis, a crucial step in Shigella pathogenesis. Using anti-aipB antiserum and protein A conjuncted gold particles, the specific locations of ipaB protein are labeled by immuno-electron microscopy. Signella are a genus of non-lactose-forming, nonmtile, gram-negative rods belonging to the family Enterobacteriacae. The species S. flexneri is a freqeuent cause of acute diarrhea in humans, and is synonymous with group B dysentery bacilli. TEM Magnification =3,500 at 70mm. PR 3E6775.
