Caption: Tongue bacteria. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of bacteria (red) on the surface of a pig's tongue. Large numbers of bacteria can form a visible layer on the surface of the tongue (brown). The mouth contains a large number of bacteria, most of which are harmless or even beneficial. However, some bacteria can cause infections or lead to tooth decay. Magnification: x6250 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
