Caption: Disintegration of a cosmic ray carbon nucleus in photographic emulsion. The carbon enters from the top & collides with a nucleus in the emulsion, which moves off at right angles towards the right. The carbon nucleus disintegrates into a proton, an alpha particle, & a lithium nucleus. All three move straight down the picture, with very little separation between them. The proton track is so intermittent that it is best seen by holding the picture level with one's eyes & looking along it. The greater ionising ability of the alpha particle & lithium nucleus makes their tracks denser. The other tracks in the photo are probably from pions.
