Conjugation involves genes moving from one bacterium to another via a pilus, shown here in red. The donor cell is shown coloured magenta, and the recipient is shown coloured green. The genes transferred are plasmids, small autonomously replicating pieces of DNA. The formation of pili is governed by a plasmid known as F-factor, which confers 'maleness' on its bacterial host.
