Caption: Escherichia coli. Coloured freeze-fracture Trans- mission Electron Micrograph (TEM) of a single bacterium of Escherichia coli. In this freeze- fracture technique the bacterial surface is seen. Escherichia coli is a motile, rod-shaped, Gram negative bacteria found as part of the normal fauna in the human gut. Under certain conditions it may become pathogenic causing infection to the urinogenital tract in adults, and diarrhoea in children. This bacteria has played an important role in genetic engineering, leading to the emergence of the biotechnology industry. Magnification: unknown.
