Caption: Escherichia coli. Coloured Transmission Electron Micrograph (TEM) of a single Escherichia coli bacterium. Here, it is coloured black/blue. It is a Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacillus bacteria. Hair- like flagellae on the surface of the cell are used for motility. Escherichia coli is a normal inhabitant of the human intestine. Under certain conditions it may become harmful and cause infections in the intestinal or urinogenital tracts. Escherichia coli is also the organism that is most commonly used in genetic engineering experiments. Magnification: unknown.
