Caption: Escherichia coli. Coloured transmission micrograph of the enterobacteriaceae bacteria Escherichia coli (E. coli). The cell is coloured yellow/ orange; the hair-like flagellae are pink. These bacteria are Gram negative motile rods. They inhabit the intestinal tracts of humans and warm blooded animals. E.coli plays a nutritional role in the digestive tract by synthesizing vitamins, particularly vitamin K. As a facultative aerobe, E. coli consumes oxygen, rendering the large intestine anerobic. Some strains of E. coli are pathogenic, causing diarrhoea in infants & urinary tract infections. Magnification: unknown.
