Caption: Antibiotic effect on bacteria. Coloured transmission electron micrograph of the bacterium Escherichia coli, treated with penicillin. At lower centre is the rounded "body" of the bacterium, showing protrusions to upper left and right (called "rabbit ears"). These protrusions are due to the action of the penicillin drug. The drug affects the cell wall (wavy line), deforming the cell shape before the wall breaks killing the bacterium. E. coli occurs normally in the gut of humans. It may cause gastro-enteritis and urinary tract infections. Magnification: x19,000 at 6x7cm size. x60,000 at 8x10 inch size.
