Caption: E. coli bacteria. Coloured transmission electron micrograph of three Escherichia coli bacteria. These rod-shaped, Gram-negative bacteria (purple) have numerous tail-like flagellae (yellow) which help them to move. E. coli normally inhabits the human intestine and usually is harmless. Under certain conditions its numbers may increase and cause infection. Some strains are responsible for gastroenteritis in children, particularly in tropical countries. This bacteria is a cause of "traveller's diarrhoea" and of 80% of all urinary tract infections. It is also the organism most used in genetic studies. Magnification: unknown.
