Caption: E. coli bacteria. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through two Escherichia coli bacteria. E. coli are Gram- negative rod-shaped bacteria. They have a multi- layered cell wall around the cell. To the inside of the cell wall is the cytoplasmic membrane which contains the cytoplasm and the nuclear material. E. coli is normally a harmless inhabitant of the human gut, where it aids digestion and helps to make vitamin K. Some strains, however, are pathogenic, causing food poisoning. E. coli is commonly used to clone genes in genetic engineering. Magnification x13,000 at 6x4.5cm size.
