Caption: False-colour streamer chamber photograph of the production & decay of a xi-minus particle, one of the family of strange particles. A negative kaon has interacted at the foot of the photo with a proton in the gas filling the chamber; this produces (left to right) a positive pion, a negative pion, a positive kaon & the negative xi. The xi travels only a short way before decaying into a negative pion, which veers to the right, & a lambda. The lambda is neutral & therefore invis- sible; it decays almost immediately to a proton & a negative pion. The blob on the proton track is an artefact of the imaging system. The xi-minus is sometimes also known as the cascade particle.
