Caption: False-colour transmission electron micrograph of the Gram-negative bacterium Legionella pneumophila, cause of Legionnaire's disease, showing its long single flagellum. The bacteria were identified as an agent of disease in 1976 after a mysterious outbreak of pneumonia & other respiratory illness at an American Legion convention in the USA. It was found living in water-tanks, shower- heads & in the cooling towers of air-conditioning systems. The disease is also known as legionellosis. Magnification: x9420 at 6x4.5cm size, x5140 at 35mm size.
