Caption: Transmisson electron micrograph of the bacterium Legionella pneumophila, the cause of Legionnaire's disease, a usually fatal form of lobar pneumonia. A gram negative bacterium, it is small & elongated, with a single long flagellate for motility. The disease obtained its name after an outbreak of 182 cases at the American Legion convention in Pennsylvania in 1976. Magnification: X40,000 at 35mm size.
