Caption: Congo deforestation. Loggers using a tractor to haul felled tree trunks cut down in a tropical rainforest in the Congo Basin. The act of hauling out the felled trees does more damage than the felling itself, as wide tracks are created to allow tractors access. These tracks are also used afterwards by farmers and poachers, leading to further deforestation. The mature hardwood trees felled are on average 100 years old. The trunks will be turned into plywood, planks and other wood products at sawmills. The wood is mainly sold in the European market. Photographed in Kayate, Oriental Province, Democratic Republic of Congo.
