Caption: Illustration (based on a scanning electron micrograph) of the characteristic, grape-like clumps of the Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus sp., a widely-occurring genus man's normal bacterial flora. Staphlyococci also account for the majority of the pus-forming (pyogenic) infections of man; such strains are classified as Staphylococcus aureus & infection in accidental & surgical wounds, boils, styes and impetigo. The clusters of the spherical bacteria seen here are most likely to be observed in pus and other body fluids - in culture films they may appear at random or in short chains.
