Caption: False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) showing the lysis (bursting) of a single bacterium, Staphylococcus aureus, by an antibiotic drug. Lysis is achieved by the destruction of the outer cell wall and the subsequent release of intracellular contents into the surrounding medium. S. aureus is a Gram-positive species of bacteria that is the commonest cause of pyogenic (pus-forming) infections in humans. Other diseases produced include osteomyelitis, bronchopneumonia and systemic septicaemia. It is also implicated in cases of food poisoning. S. aureus has evolv number of variants resistant to antibiotics. Mag: x20,000 at 35mm, x40,000 at 70mm size.
