Caption: Ruins of Pompeii. These columns and ruined buildings were part of the forum of the Roman city of Pompeii, located in the Bay of Naples, Italy. This city was ruined and buried during an eruption of the volcano Vesuvius in 79 AD. The city was rediscovered and excavated in the 18th and 19th centuries, and today it is a tourist destination visited by millions every year. This area contains the ruins of what is known as the Porticus of Popidius. In Roman cities, the forum was a central gathering place that served as a marketplace and city square. The forum would also have contained shops, temples and statues of gods, Roman emperors and important citizens.
