Caption: False-colour transmission electron micrograph of the spherical bacterium Staphylococcus aureus in the process of cell division. The cell walls (red) are visible, forming two daughter cells. A dark purple clump of genetic material is present in each cell. S. aureus are gram-positive bacteria which are commonly found on healthy human skin & mucous membranes, such as the lining of the mouth. They may, however, cause boils, usually by entering through a hair follicle or a break in the skin. They are also responsible for internal abscesses & any acute suppurative infection. They are commonly found in grape-like clusters. Magnification: x57,000 at 6x6cm size.
