Caption: Staphylococcus aureus. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of colonies of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. They are typically found in closely packed grape-like clusters such as seen here. Staphylococcus aureus is a Gram-positive bacteria of spherical (coccus) shape. They are found on healthy human skin, and on mucous membranes such as the lining of the mouth. Staphylococcus aureus is, however, commonly found in pus and is a cause boils and acne, entering the skin through a hair follicle or a cut. It is also responsible for internal abscesses and most types of acute suppurative (pus-forming) infections. Magnification: unknown.
