Caption: Staphylococcus aureus. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria (green, centre & lower left) on PVC (polyvinyl chloride) flooring. Also visible are skin flakes (upper right). These bacteria often grow in these grape-like clusters of small spheres. S. aureus is extremely common in humans, living harmlessly on the skin and inside the nose, throat and large intestine. However, if they multiply in blocked pores in the skin, they can cause pus to build up, forming an acne spot or boil. Infections are treated with antibiotics if they become serious. Magnification: x3600 at 6x7cm size.
