Caption: A female Batagur (Batagur baska) filling in her nest hole after laying her eggs in December on a sandbar of the Perak River, Malaysia. At this stage the terrapin thumps herself down to compact the sand: this makes the tuntung noise that gives the species its Malay name. IUCN considers the species as Endangered in peninsular Malaysia and Indonesia, and Critically Endangered in India and Bangladesh.
