Caption: Low power light micrograph of a colony of Streptococcus pyogenes, growing on blood agar which displays their beta-haemolytic property. Beta haemolysis is the production of a zone of clear, colourless medium around a colony of some species of streptococci (such as S. pyogenes) growing on blood agar. The colourless zone represents lysis (bursting) of the red blood cells and decolourization of the haemoglobin contained within them.
