Caption: Streptococcus sp. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) showing a culture of Streptococci bacteria. These are Group D streptococci, defined by the Lancefield test which identifies particular polysaccharides in the streptococcal cell wall. Streptococcus is a genus of Gram- positive, non- motile, spherical bacteria that typically form chains. They are commensals in the normal, healthy flora of human respiratory, alimentary (gut) and female genital tracts. The pathogenic species include: S. pneumoniae causing pneumonia of the lungs and S. pyogenes causing sore throats and tonsillitis in young children. Magnification x2,400 at 35mm size.
