Caption: Streptococcus bacteria. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Streptococcus type A bacteria, forming chains. Streptococci are spherical, Gram- positive bacteria that typically form chains. Although most are saprophytes (feeding on dead and decaying matter), some species are parasites of humans and animals. They are also a part of the normal, healthy flora of the human respiratory, alimentary (gut) and female genital tracts. Pathogenic species include: S. pneumoniae , and S. pyogenes, which accounts for the high incidence of sore throats and tonsillitis in young children. Magnification: x6000 at 5x7cm size. Magnification: x3000 at 35mm size.
